My kryptonite

I have always loved the change of seasons. As spring warms to summer, then summer cools to fall, I have delighted in the transformation of the weather. However, the novelty of the seasonal changes soon wears off and I am ready to move on, eagerly looking forward to the next time I can alter my wardrobe.

There is no other season that I can say this about more than winter. After the joy of the holiday season disseminates we are left with a bleak outlook, with nary a holiday until Easter. The thing I don't like most about winter is the weather - the cold, blustery, dreary days that make you wish you could curl up in a chair with a big warm blanket and snooze until Spring (hmmmm...). This winter cold chills me to the bone, and it is only with my little space heater at home that I am able to live through the winter (Derek doesn't want to turn on the heat!). The chill renders me lazy and sluggish, basically helpless and vulnerable. You might say that the winter cold is my kryptonite.

Only with the slow thaw of spring and then the full warmth of summer am I able to return to my vibrant self (haha). But seriously, I'm ready for this winter to end already! I guess I have a few more months...

I don't get it

Okay, so this is what you might call the height of football season. How do I know this? Well, ladies and gentlemen, I am married to a sportsaholic, that is why. Don't get me wrong - I love him and will never stop, but there are some times that I just want to wring his neck.

Raise your hand if you've ever heard this before:

Woman - "Honey, let's go out to eat after church today."
Man - "Can't. Cowboys play at noon. We can just eat crackers."

Or this:

Woman - "Honey, can you come outside and help me bring in the groceries?"
Man - "Can it wait until this quarter is over?"
Woman - "Forget it. I'll do it myself."

Or the ever-popular:

Woman - "Honey, this is the fifth time I've asked you to go pick up your clothes in the bedroom!"
Man - "....huh?" (staring at the screen)

Now, I'm not saying that any of those scenarios are common in MY life, but I'm sure they happen somewhere (we get close to them, though). But honestly, why are guys SO in love with football? Or sports in general? Derek could probably watch ESPN for hours and never get tired of it.

I can think of very few things that would attract my attention to the point that I lose track of the people around me and life in general. I admit I like to watch certain shows and movies, but I don't ignore people who are trying to talk to me or put my life on hold for the next week because its Bowl Week or whatever. In fact, I think this is a male flaw, geneticly perfect in its sloth-ness.

However, I realize that to half the world's population, sports are very important and so I am trying to be understanding when it comes to football season (which takes up half the year, but oh well). After all, the poor sap didn't mean to be born like this, did he? In fact, I plan to write a manual for other women with this same problem. It will be full of tips and factoids to throw out during parties so that your man will glow with pride. Look for it in stores by Spring 2045.
